Environmental Resource Centre

Under an MoU between the DLIST project and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the Environmental Resource Centre was created to anchor environmentally orientated subject modules, as well as related research between various departments at CPUT. Formally managed by the Engineering Department, the ERC now offers two distance learning courses: Environmental Engineering – Sustainable Development in Coastal Areas and a course focusing on the practicalities of Stakeholder Participation Processes.

I had a hand in developing the courses, but was really focused on setting up a web portal for the ERC, building up an environmental video library and also to support the ongoing development of a student environmental wiki. Final student projects on the Env. Engineering course were conducted as collaborative authoring experiments on the wiki – the activity both becoming a learning outcome, and developing an information resource for the following cohort to build on.

Unfortunately, a hard-drive crash and simultaneous failure of the CPUT backup routines means we have likely lost a significant chunk of the Wiki recently. Their tech team are working to get the system back online now…
